Elli had been angling for an invite to the Gomiumi Genomics Compound for over a year, knowing from the get-go that adding her name to the waitlist would lead only to waiting. But armed as she was with confidence, knowledge, & several years of study in Berlin under a recent Nobel Prize winner, her nascent experiments with CRISPR had drawn the interest of numerous colleagues, to such an extent that she'd been able to secure her invitation before even having to consider resorting to less savory tactics. Yet, since her actual arrival at the remote island compound, she & her fellow invitees had been herded through its various laboratories at an unseemly speed. She could only assume that these "informative" tours were intended for investors, insufficient to advance even her most cursory lines of scientific inquiry. After 3 long days of this frustration, unable to sleep, she walked out of guest lodging & into the night. She wandered barefoot around the silent complex, half-heartedly pulling on doors she knew would be locked, until she rounded the last building near the bordering jungle. In the darkness, a few distant lights glowed from deep within the thick foliage, a subtle but clearly man-made path leading toward them. Far along this path, she suddenly noticed the well-camoflaged enclosures surrounding her, the largest of which had trees & ferns growing right from their rooftops, seemingly meant to conceal them from overhead view. Audible signs of animal life, which she'd normally have heard emanating from the jungle itself, were here coming only from within these structures. It took her what felt like hours to locate an opening in one, & when she finally looked inside, her mind instantly began to compile a list of equipment she would need when she returned.

Many girls in many dimensions, one mysterious piece of jewelry…

Mila & Milana
Mila & Milana loved nothing more than to scare the crap out of hotel guests, lingering in the long hallways for hours, waiting for one unsuspecting innocent after another to come around a corner and spot them…
Parker
Parker, in the future, on her scooter, readying to no longer be parked…
Starla
Starla used to have a black thumb. Then she found the black ring…
Em
Em, paradoxically feeling more than ever like a misfit toy…
Saffron
What Saffron missed most about smoking was having a reason to compel her to take smoke breaks. So she started feeding the birds…
Sonata
Sonata rarely had cause to visit the main floor of her building, preferring to keep to her own rented office space upstairs. Like her patients, she generally preferred privacy. But her patients had been more distracted than usual lately, reporting a wide variety of confusing phenomena upon entering the building, ever since it had been purchased by the mysterious new owners, and the bank that used to occupy the ground floor became… something else…
Gia
Gia, about to bring the hammer down…
Zofya
Zofya had long ago achieved a level of fame at which everyone knew her last name, but rarely felt a need to use it. She was a singular talent, a fact made all the more evident by the unprecedented scope of her interplanetary concert tour, and her insistence on traveling to perform in the flesh, rather than relying on the industry standard remote holographic projections. Still, by the last leg of her year-long journey around the galaxy, she was as ready as anyone would be to get home to Earth and take a break.
Nyx
Nyx, amongst the orbs, avoiding self-reflection…
Samara
Samara was charged with protection of the sacred forest. Since early childhood, she had been trained by the Coven in the ancient ways of her peoples' magic. The Dozen Mothers took turns guiding her through the dark woods, each imparting her own share of esoteric knowledge, gradually imbuing her with the power required to hear the breathing of the trees, to communicate in birdsong, to summon lightning from the clouds. Eventually, she began to feel the forest as an extension of herself, or rather, that she herself was an extension of the forest…
